Green Innovative Glass (GIG) Ceramic Tiles

Green Innovative Glass (GIG) is introduced to enhance the efficiency of the resources for sustainability of environment. Increasing waste amount is considered as a critical issue in waste management. Amount of waste glass is increasing due to daily utilization and demand. Malaysian produces over 15,000 tons of rubbish every day and 4 % of this is representing the glass wastes.

GIG project utilized waste glass and industrial waste (>90 wt. %) in producing glass ceramic tile. The processing is easily adaptive to current tile manufacturing industry. This is less energy consumption compared to current glass recycling practice. It saves natural raw materials. Quality of product is comparable to those in the market. It is aimed to be a pioneer for green tag tiles product for application such as floor tiles, wall tiles and path way paving.

ADVANTAGES

  1. Simple method and easily adapted to tiles manufacturing industry.
  2. Produce in low temperature (725 – 850 °C).
  3. Reduced energy consumption and cost effectiveness.
  4. Waste consumption > 90 wt. % and utilized for the immobilization industrial waste (e.g. carbon black from tire industry and incineration of oil and gas sludge).

  8. Efficient for immobilization of hazardous industrial waste.

 

SUMMARY
